Gravity makes rhythm. Makes me want to go out and draw. This is sorta where my head goes when I make drawings. It’s fun to see someone else see that place too.

Here’s a shot at my new drawing space. I brought a new drawing board where I can mount papers and move the board around. It also has a smooth surface; that’s very helpful.

I made small drawings and many sketches for new larger drawings I’m planning to do in the studio.

Not feeling very verbal. Just wanted you to know what I was up to.

Working madly to get my studio ready for POSt (Philadelphia Open Studio Tours). This is crazy since it’s a whole new studio. I’ve been planning, painting, constructing for weeks. Finally. I have a rough and workable plan for the entrance to the space. I’ll be reusing two doors from the old design studio.

I plan to paint them a warm gray, bolt them together, and hang them from a sliding rail. That will allow me to bring large works and materials through the doors easily. It will also make it easier to connect with the public space which I hope to make more of a lounge for the third floor artists.

I’m hoping to paint the doors this weekend, bolt them together, and get the hardware on.

I’ll be the first space to actually have glass in my doors. This will help when I display work or heavybubble holds shows or salons in the space.

Still have not found my camera. So this is a shot of my moleskine sketchbook using Margaret’s iPhone.

I love planning spaces. Especially ones that allow me to do my work in comfortable and efficient ways. Each new plan is an adjustment of my preferences. This shows the new position of my glass counter. It gives me my second drawing wall.

Some sketches for new drawings. Have done some additional mark tests to determine choices of paper and medium. Looking forward to being able to get into the studio again.

Have spent some more time with Google SketchUP, relearning some things I have forgotten. Working more on the layout of the new HQ. This image shows the long common hallway on the south-side. We’re creating a larger door opening to move in/out the larger and 3d works. Also, a welcoming entrance for art openings. We’ve created a wall in front of the storage to feature a signature work to draw visitors in. The left side is facing North and is an ouside wall.

Looking in from the northwest. Great amount of north light. French doors and two windows. The north wall is shorter than the south by about three feet. Doors open to the outside. Would be great to have a little balcony, wouldn’t it? Did I mention we’re on the third floor?

A look inside from above. The entrance-way is closest to the bottom of the screen. To the left is a nine foot glass countertop with drawers in the cabinets below. This is a perfect place for getting ink to the right tack for monoprints, mixing pigments, trimming and gluing papers. I’ve used these drawers to hold dividers to hold many tools, boards, and papers.

Straight ahead are two 8 foot high banks of wooden shelves for storing all supplies in multiles. This has been successfully used in two other spaces. The first wall has 22″ deep shelves excellent for framed work an heavy materials and tools. The front is covered with a substrate that will accept T and push pins; maybe sanded homosote or painted drywall. The back set of shelves are the same height but narrower.

In the northeast corner is a storage counter with sliding doors. This will probably be where the coffee maker and fridge will go. More ideas coming in the next post.

The above image shows the frame structure of the studio/gallery space. This will provide excellent above head storage and lighting options. New additional lighting for exhibitions and drawing.

Lots of possibilities to be worked out.

A few small sketches and my moleskine is almost full. I’ll be looking to turn some of these into letterpress cards for the holidays. Oo Ooo maybe they could be gifts too.

I did about 21 of these. I’m enjoying drawing when I’m not in the studio.
That could be very important as time goes on.

We are back from the annual retreat to the north country. We had a mix of weather and an absolutely wonderful time walking on pine needles and watching as the clouds enveloped us. We tossed plenty of logs on the fire, drank HOT coffee, tea, and Ovaltine.

When it was warm enough to wrap my hands around some kind of drawing tool I made sketches.
This is one that I made in my new Moleskine watercolor book. I really enjoyed using it. Many more images and stories to come.
